Lyme disease is a dangerous bacterial disease that is carried and transmitted by ticks. Lyme disease can affect both pets and people, tho studies have shown that dogs are 50% more susceptible than humans. If left untreated, the disease can lead to arthritis, kidney failure, heart damage, and death in both humans and dogs.

tickYour pet can get Lyme disease in almost any outdoor location where the deer tick is found. The disease has been found in every US state, and is especially prevalent in areas of Ohio and the Midwest where ticks are abundant. The best way to protect your pet from Lyme disease is by protecting them from ticks. Vaccinating your pet with LymeVax® has shown to be extremely effective and safe, and a quick blood test can detect Lyme disease in it's earliest stages.

If detected early enough, Lyme disease can be successfully treated. Symptoms may be hidden in the early stages of the disease, so it's very important to have your dog tested during every annual visit or if you suspect your dog has been exposed to ticks. Recognizable symptoms include:
  • Lameness or stiffness
  • Swelling of limbs or joints
  • Fever
  • Lethargy/Reluctance to move
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Depression

If you recognize these symptoms in your pet, it is vital that you see your veterinarian for a physical examination and blood test. The staff at Hills & Dales Veterinary Clinic is here to help, and can provide vaccines and treatment for Lyme disease, as well as help you with preventive measures and products to protect your pet from ticks. For more information or to schedule a physical examination, please call our office at 293-1993.
