If you're considering purchasing a pet from a breeder, there are some important questions you should ask that breeder before making your decision. Here is a list of questions to ask to make sure you are getting a healthy and happy new pet:
-
Disease history of parents and grandparents (e.g. eyes, ears, hips, allergies, problems with anesthesia, etc.)
-
Disease history of previous litters.
-
Total number of litters to date. Age of parents.
-
Number in litter, including number of nonviable littermates.
-
Any and all medication (including HWP, Flea/Tick preventive, deworming, vitamins, nutritional supplements, etc.) administered to parents and littermates.
-
Ask whether the parents were evaluated, vaccinated and dewormed by a veterinarian within the last calendar year. Please ask for the attending veterinarian's name, number and location.
-
If "okay" for hips, ask if the parents have been OFA certified, the rating and at what age.
-
Ask about the pet's current diet, volume and frequency of feeding.
-
Ask about the pet's history of exposure to disease (i.e. field work, travel history, swimming in lakes, ponds or stagnant water supplies, exposure to wildlife, wooded areas, etc).
-
Please ask for any and all written documentation regarding previous vaccines and all treatments.
