Questions to Ask a Breeder Prior to Purchasing a Pet

If you're considering purchasing a pet from a breeder, there are some important questions you should ask that breeder before making your decision. Here is a list of questions to ask to make sure you are getting a healthy and happy new pet:

  1. Disease history of parents and grandparents (e.g. eyes, ears, hips, allergies, problems with anesthesia, etc.)

  2. Disease history of previous litters.

  3. Total number of litters to date. Age of parents.

  4. Number in litter, including number of nonviable littermates.

  5. Any and all medication (including HWP, Flea/Tick preventive, deworming, vitamins, nutritional supplements, etc.) administered to parents and littermates.

  6. Ask whether the parents were evaluated, vaccinated and dewormed by a veterinarian within the last calendar year. Please ask for the attending veterinarian's name, number and location.

  7. If "okay" for hips, ask if the parents have been OFA certified, the rating and at what age.

  8. Ask about the pet's current diet, volume and frequency of feeding.

  9. Ask about the pet's history of exposure to disease (i.e. field work, travel history, swimming in lakes, ponds or stagnant water supplies, exposure to wildlife, wooded areas, etc).

  10. Please ask for any and all written documentation regarding previous vaccines and all treatments.

This list is merely a guideline and is not all inclusive. Please contact our office at (937) 293-1993 if you need assistance.
